Equipment manufacturers turn to Brazil

23 Mar 11 Two leading manufacturers of construction machinery - JCB and Manitowoc - both announced on the opening day of the Conexpo trade show in Las Vegas their plans for new factories in Brazil.

JCB has committed US $100m to building a 32,000 sq m factory on a 50 acre site in Sorocoba, a few miles from its existing factory. JCB has been producing backoe loaders in Brazil since 2001 and excavators there since 2010. All production will relocate to the new facility. Due to open next year, it will have a production capacity of 5,000 backhoes and 2,500 excavators a year.

Manitowoc Crane Group has broken ground on a 25,000 sq m factory in Paso Fundo,a city in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul.It plans to begin production in mid 2012 of Grove-brand rough terrain hydraulic telescopic cranes and certain Potain-brand tower cranes. President Eric Etchart said: “Brazil is a market that deserves a local manufacturing facility.”
