Buckingham’s team, which includes CJCT Architects and Amey, has completed the detailed design and construction work is now starting on site.
The overall scope of the project is:
- Construction of a new, BREEAM excellent rated station building with new lifts and enclosed footbridge between platforms 1 and 2
- Retail facilities and a waiting room
- Section 278 street works to create a new station entrance and exit, with forecourt area for taxis and buses.
The scheme also requires collaboration with East Coast Main Line Compacy, which manages the station and is the ultimate client of the project.
Buckingham rail director Simon Walkley said: “Having delivered the detailed design to Grip 5 on time and on budget we now focussing on delivering the same performance through the construction stage and handing over the BREEAM excellent Wakefield station in November”.
Wakefield Council leader Peter Box said: “We are pleased that work is now starting to bring a new rail station to Wakefield. This has always been an integral part of the master plan for the re-development of the area. It will provide a modern gateway to the city centre and complement other key developments in the area.”
