The underground concrete casing will be built beneath the eastern rail yard of the Hudson Yards site in New York City. The project has been funded through a Federal Transit Administration allocation for Hurricane Sandy relief.
The project is a key element of Amtrak’s gateway programme and is intended to preserve an underground right-of-way for possible future expansion of the rail service via two new tunnels underneath the Hudson River between New Jersey and Penn Station, New York.
The box tunnel will measure approximately 244m long, 15m wide, and 10.6m tall. Construction is expected to begin in August and substantial completion is expected in late 2014.
