Latest models to the market include Caterpillar’s family of motor graders, now upgraded to M Series 2. (See Digger Blog for other Cat product development news.)
The 140M2 and 160M2 motor graders, along with their all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions, the 140M2 AWD and 160M2 AWD, not only have new Stage IIIB engines but also offer lowering operating costs and greater productivity, Cat says.
As with the original M Series, the new models are designed for a range of tasks, including heavy blade work, road maintenance, ripping and precision-finishing applications.
The Cat C9.3 ACERT engine with variable horsepower (VHP) offers a wider net-variable-horsepower range than the M Series predecessors. The 140M2 and 160M2 have power ranges of 144kW to 181kW and 159kW to 196kW respectively. Net power ratings for the 140M2 AWD and 160M2 AWD are 151kW to 181kW and 166kW to 196kW, respectively.
The engine technology combines refined fuel, air-management and electronic systems with the Cat NOx-Reduction System and Cat Clean Emissions Module (CEM). The innvative air-management system works with the electronically controlled, common-rail fuel-injection system to provide extremely clean, efficient combustion and optimum fuel economy, Cat says.
The Cat NOx-Reduction System captures and cools a small volume of exhaust gas, then returns the cooled gas to the combustion chamber to reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions. The CEM is an aftertreatment unit that includes a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and the Cat regeneration system. The no-maintenance DOC assists in reducing the hydrocarbon within the exhaust stream and the DPF traps particulate matter (PM), or soot.
Under most operating conditions, exhaust heat continually oxidizes the PM collected in the filter through passive regeneration. However, if supplemental regeneration is needed, the Cat regeneration system elevates exhaust gas temperatures to oxidize soot within the DPF. The regeneration system works away automatically in the background and unnoticed by the operator.
M Series 2 models have the option of the new Cat grade control cross slope system - a control and guidance system that integrates traditional grade control with standard machine components at the factory.
In addition, the AccuGrade Ready option provides all the mounting hardware, controls and harnesses for easy installation of all AccuGrade kits.
