Password protection for Cat excavators

30 Mar 12 Caterpillar has introduced five new compact radius mini excavators in the 3.5t to 8.2t classes. But you will need to know the password to start them.

The five new E series models replace the old D series to meet Stage IIIA emissions regulations. They have a new digital control panel, specially designed for Cat mini excavators, called COMPASS – complete operation, maintenance, performance, and security system – with a password protected anti-theft system.

Machines up to 5.5t have a economy mode feature that adjusts engine speed and offers claimed fuel savings of up to 20%. There is also an auto-idle function that drops engine revs after four seconds of inactivity.

The new E series models include electronic fuel pump priming, new joysticks, and reconfigured layout of controls. They also use an end-damping system in both the boom and stick cylinders to reduce shock loads and to reduce material spillage.

The largest model in the series, the 308E CR SB is only available in swing boom configuration. Counterweights are available for when added stability is required.

The Construction Index’s own resident expert Nick Drew – aka Digger Blogger – tested the 308E recently and commended its power and smoothness of operations. Engine horsepower is boosted by some 17% compared to the old D Series model, he found, which translates into faster hydraulics, which improves travel speed, grade climbing and manoeuvrability.

He also said that operators would also appreciate the more spacious cab.
