The joint venture of Abengoa and Salini Impregilo’s Fisia Italimpianti unit will design and build the plant for ACWA Power on behalf of the end client, the state-owned water desalination company, Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC).
The plant, which is in the Shuaiba area on the western coast of Saudi Arabia, will use reverse osmosis technology to deliver up to 250,000m3 of water per day. It will supply potable water to more than a million residents in the cities of Mecca, Jeddah and Taif.
The joint venture has signed a limited notice to proceed with ACWA Power to start the preparatory work. Signing of a full notice to proceed is expected by 27 July, with the plant due for hand-over by May 2019.
