The British Standards Institution (BSI) has verified the three ahead of the 4th April 2016 government deadline which requires all government building and infrastructure projects in the UK to be PAS 1192-2 compliant.
The scheme, which was launched in December 2015 has been developed by BSI to help designers and contractors, as well as their supply chains, to provide evidence that they have the capability to deliver projects using building information modelling (BIM). To achieve verification from BSI of their BIM capability, contractors have to demonstrate that they adhere to the requirements of the PAS (Publicly Available Specification) 1192-2 standard through an independent assessment by BSI. The assessment involves an onsite audit which will assess the documented procedures and systems for all processes in PAS 1192-2, which also includes compliance with BS 1192 and BS 1192-4, and the competency of staff.
BAM Construct UK Ltd and Skanska UK were the first companies to be verified. [See our previous report here.]
Balfour Beatty principal BIM integrator Neil Thompson said: “This certification gives assurance to our customers that we utilise BIM to handle and manage information with the upmost degree of care and accuracy and to the highest standard, throughout project delivery.”
Bechtel’s virtual project delivery operations lead Stephen Smith said: “We’re delighted to be among a handful of companies to be certified by the British Standards Institution to deliver construction projects at BIM Level 2 for design & construction. Bechtel is pioneering the use of new technology and innovation within the construction industry and our certification provides our customers and supply chain with the assurance that we have the capability to deliver projects using BIM ahead of new government legislation.”
VolkerFitzpatrick head of planning and design Rob Dingwall said: “VolkerFitzpatrick were pleased to collaborate closely with BSI to achieve our Level 2 certification for design & construction and to be at the very forefront of BIM in the UK. As a world class contractor, we wanted to partner with a world class standards organisation. We found the experience very thorough but practical and we’d recommend working with BSI for certification.”
