The Houtrib dike is located between Enkhuizen and Lelystad and protects large parts of the country from flooding. During storms, it prevents water from the IJsselmeer lake flooding into the Markermeer lake.
However, it does not meet government safety standards. The project for the Dutch Directorate General for Public Works & Water Management, Rijkswaterstaat, entails reinforcement on both sides with sand and rock over a distance of 25km.
The work will be carried out over the period from 2017 to 2020.
