Works commenced on site for the new building in January 2010 and the planned operational handover of the terminal happened on the original set date of 31 March 2011 (midnight). Mansell will continue to complete the remaining car parking and canopy section which is expected to be finished by July 2011.
This magnificent landmark has been designed to provide passengers with a modern “airport experience” with restaurants, shops, check-in desks and a dedicated VIP area.
The terminal is a major sustainable achievement. It includes salt water harvesting systems, an Earth Energy Plant, wind catchers across the roof to provide natural ventilation and maximised natural daylight. 100% of demolition materials, including imported fill was recycled.
The facility was opened by Rt Hon Vince Cable Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and Portsmouth City MP Councillor Mike Hancock CBE.
MP for Portsmouth Mike Hancock stated "The terminal has created 800 new jobs and will bring in £71 million of revenue annually to the City of Portsmouth. The new terminal is easily the best and most advanced ferry and cruise terminal in all of Europe, and we believe, in the world".
Rt Hon Vince Cable went on to say, "This is a great success story, an absolutely magnificent building and example of regeneration contributing to economic recovery of Portsmouth and the UK".
