£33m Shirley regeneration scheme finally ready to start

5 Mar 12 BAM Construction has been picked to build a £33m regeneration scheme in Shirley, West Midlands, on behalf of Shirley Advance, a joint venture between Helical Bar and Coltham Developments.

The project includes shops and houses, led by an 85,000 sq ft Asda supermarket.  BAM will also build 70,000 sq ft of additional retail space providing about 20 new retail units and a 500+ space underground car park. The development will also include 27 three-bedroom townhouses and 56 one- and two-bedroom apartments, for a mix of private and affordable housing. Once completed, the development will have an end value of approximately £85 million.

The project has been in the works since 2004 and has had to navigate a series of planning hurdles. Construction is now finally starting this spring, with completion scheduled by spring 2014.

BAM construction director John Mensforth said: “It is very pleasing that we have been able to work with the client over such a long period of time to ensure that this important project for the area will finally happen. It shows that BAM has the skills and experience to unlock the type of retail and regeneration projects that are becoming viable again after a difficult few years. This scheme will develop valuable and much needed facilities for the people of Shirley.”
