Carillion has won a £44m civil engineering contract to expand Abberton Reservoir in Essex.
Client Essex & Southern Water, a subsidiary of Northumbrian Water, wants to increase the storage capacity of the reservoir by 60% to meet the predicted demand for water in the future, and enhance the area’s reputation as one of Europe’s most renowned wetland sites.
The work involves raising the banks of the reservoir by 3.2m to accommodate the extra capacity, installing a 32km-long transfer pipeline, and building a 2km-long diversion to the B1026 road.
Carillion saw off four other contractors to win the deal.
