Construction companies accounted for 14% of all corporate insolvencies in 2009, according to research by accountants RSM Tenon Recovery.
The study found that 3,360 firms in the construction sector went into insolvency in 2009.
Some 862 businesses in the construction sector failed in the last quarter of the year, up by 67% on Q4 2007 and by 16% on Q4 2008.
Total insolvencies in the UK during 2009 were 11% higher than in 2008.
