Construction output fell by 1% during the last three months of 2009, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.
The statistics show construction output in Q4 2009 totalled £24.4bn compared with £24.6bn in Q3.
During Q3, construction output had risen by 2.5% (£600m) due a surge in repair and maintenance work.
But repair and maintenance work fell by by 9% during Q4. New work rose by 5%, with housing the biggest contributor.
The total volume of construction output for 2009 was 11% lower than the previous year.
