Gateshead International Stadium is set for a major redevelopment which could see £50m invested in upgrading its facilities.
Gateshead Council is inviting bids for a development partner who would take over the stadium and an adjoining site and develop a Sports Village, which would include:
- an ice arena, with seating to accommodate ice hockey and other events,
- an indoor ski slope,
- provision of facilities for other sports, and
- complementary, sports-related uses in support of an ice arena and/or indoor ski slope including, hotels, restaurants and cafes.
The Council wants the project to act as a catalyst for a wider regeneration of the area, linking to central Gateshead and the River Tyne.
