Scottish Water is looking for up to 100 firms for a new operated plant hire framework, which will start in August 2010.
The framework, which will run for an initial period of six years with the option to extend for a further four, has a total value of between £250m and £300m.
The framework is divided into three lots.
Lot 1 covers major plant, including excavators, road rollers and dumpers, and is valued at between £239m and £277m.
Lot 2 covers the provision of a managed service for operated plant, and is valued at between £10m and £20m.
Lot 3 covers mobile and static cranes and is valued at between £1m and £3m.
Scottish water will require that all contractors or suppliers who contract through this procurement will gain or hold a minimum health & safety and quality standard to scottish water requirements.
The deadline for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is 1 March.
