Tesco has been granted planning permission for the construction of a major new retail quarter in West Bromwich.
Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council gave the green light for the 570,505 sq ft scheme on a 15ha site in the town centre.
The plans include a Tesco Extra store, shops, a restaurant, a cinema, plus integrated routes and public spaces to link the new development with the rest of the town.
Demolition work has started, and road improvement work will commence shortly. Construction of the main retail development will begin later this with an estimated completion date of autumn 2012.
Tony Fletcher, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, said: “This consent represents a major milestone towards the reinvigoration and regeneration of West Bromwich in a tough economic time.”
