A team of cyclists from Brighton & Hove 4Delivery, a Costain Joint Venture, has recently raised £4,000 for a local cancer hospice.

2 Feb 11 The team entered the London to Brighton cycle ride, covering a distance of over 60 miles. However, this was no ordinary ride to the coast; instead it started at midnight in Sloan Square, London, with the target of arriving on the beach for breakfast.

The Martlets Hospice in Brighton is an 18-bed inpatient unit and day hospice that also offers a home service. It costs £5million per year to keep the hospice open and 75% of this is generated from kind donations and fundraising events.

Brighton & Hove WwTW Project Manager and team captain, Graham Sugrue, said: “This is a very worthwhile charity, a cause that touches everyone in different ways. For us to be able to do something for a local charity and then to visit the hospice and receive such gratitude from them was truly touching.”

The money raised was helped significantly through the generous sponsorship of other contractors on site, families and friends. Sugrue said: “We are amazed at the generosity of all sponsors, especially in the current economic climate and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their donations”.

The team consisted of Graham Sugrue, Dan Baker, Rob Taylor, Simon Smith, Henry Quigley Jones, Phil Ebner, Andrew Murfin, Nick Curtis and Warren Mitchell, all of whom completed the journey in time for bacon sandwiches on the beach.

Brighton & Hove 4Delivery Ltd is a joint venture between United Utilities, Costain and MWH, delivering a £300million environmental improvement scheme on behalf of Southern Water to bring cleaner seas to Sussex.
