Aberdeen bypass challenge rejected

1 Mar 12 The Scottish construction industry was welcomed the defeat of a legal challenge that was trying to block construction of the £350m Aberdeen bypass.

The 28-mile Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR) was originally given the go-ahead by Scottish ministers in 2009 but has been subject to legal action by campaign groups opposing the road.  This challenge has now been thrown out. Backers of the scheme describe it as being of major strategic importance to Scotland.

Alan Watt, chief executive of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Scotland, said: “CECA Scotland welcomes this decision as another step in the right direction towards the long overdue construction of the AWPR.

“Our only regret is that this essential project has been delayed as much as it has, given its importance. CECA Scotland hopes that future infrastructure projects will have a smoother transition through to delivery, while still allowing all stakeholders to have their say.

“The AWPR has been subject to a public inquiry and enjoys the overwhelming support of the wider community. It is essential that its construction now proceeds without further delay, as it will create a vital boost to both jobs and growth in the Scottish economy."

Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "The Scottish government remain totally committed to the AWPR being built as soon as possible and we are pleased that we can now move forward with this project which is vital to the future prosperity of the northeast and Scotland as a whole.

"It is hoped that the small number of objectors opposed to the AWPR will be willing to accept the decision, so that we can get on and build the road."

Derick Murray, director of regional transport partnership Nestrans, said: "We are delighted. Much more than a road, the AWPR is absolutely central to our vision of a modern-day network for the region and is the enabler to unlock a raft of significant projects across all transport modes."
