The modular theatre block was trucked down from the factory in York in component pieces and then assembled on site by crane to minimise disruption to hospital operations.

Extra capacity is needed at the hospital following its selection as the regional major trauma centre for the new East of England Trauma Network. The extension has provided additional operating theatres to free up capacity for the Trust’s emergency care services.

Yorkon’s building, which is two storeys high in parts, sits on a raised steel platform to connect it to the third level of the existing theatre department. It has been built with the potential to be extended by an additional floor. The double cantilever arrangement facilitates patient flows and access to the department’s support facilities.

The theatres were designed by LSI Architects to have a floor response factor of 1 and have a concrete floor throughout the clinical areas.  The building, which was also fitted out by Yorkon, accommodates two new theatres, preparation rooms, anaesthetic rooms, offices, scrub rooms, staff rooms, disposal hold, equipment store and plant room on the second floor.

Yorkon director Simon Ambler said, “This was a very tight site located within a live hospital environment. The use of an off-site solution benefited the overall programme, and importantly, minimised disruption to patient care.”

The scheme was craned into position in just three days, with steel-framed modules lifted over live power supplies.
