Aecom JV to manage work on UAE rail network

11 May 11 Aecom has announced that its joint venture with Parsons International has been awarded a programme management contract for the United Arab Emirates’ national railway.

The joint venture team will be responsible for programme management during the first phase of the Etihad Rail project and part of the two subsequent phases.

For the first stage of the Etihad Rail project’s Shah-Habshan-Ruwais route, Aecom will be responsible for the entire project implementation from the preliminary engineering to testing and commissioning, as well as a defect liability period once the project is complete.

The second stage comprises the remainder of the Abu Dhabi Emirate network and the connection to Jebel Ali Port. Stage 3 will involve the remainder of the Northern Emirates network. Aecom will provide system setup, preliminary engineering, contract formation and awarding engineering, procurement and construction or equivalent contracts. The work will also involve tender documentation preparation and administration as well as managing and supervising other third party contracts issued by the client.

When complete, the new national railway will provide freight and passenger service in the United Arab Emirates, stretching across the Emirates, covering a network of approximately 1,200km. The railway will connect the United Arab Emirates to Saudi Arabia via Ghweifat city in the west and Oman via Al Ain in the east.

The first stage of the project is scheduled for completion during 2014.
