Arup signs for Turkmenistan Olympic complex

13 Feb 13 Arup has signed the contract for phase two of the Ashgabat Olympic complex (AOC) in Turkmenistan’s capital.

Turkmenistan is creating an Olympic-standard series of sporting arenas designed to attract athletes from around the world. Ashgabat is not on the current Olympics candidate lists, but is hosting the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in 2017.

The second phase of the AOC will add an aquatics centre, indoor athletics arena and a tennis centre to the development, which includes 750,000m2 of sports and social buildings. Other venues include a velodrome, arenas, training halls, hotels, offices, a medical centre and media facilities.

The new complex developed by Arup and built to international sports federation standards is designed to provide a new focus for the country's youth, sporting achievement and the hosting of international mega games.

Contributors from about 20 Arup offices and external sub-consultants will work on the provision of architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, public health engineering and infrastructure design, including furniture, furnishings and equipment.
