Atkins completes medical city masterplan

1 Mar 12 Atkins has completed the masterplan for a major seafront health facility in Salalah, Oman.

The Medical City (TMC) project, being undertaken by the Apex Medical Group, represents the country’s largest private healthcare infrastructure development. The integrated healthcare development project is aimed at making the most of Salalah’s natural beauty and environment and offering a preferred destination for rehabilitation and medical tourism. Atkins’ task was to prepare the strategic masterplan of TMC on the 800,000m2 site, located by the Arabian Sea, in order to deliver a medical education and research and development facility.

“This is an important and exciting project for the region which will create world-class medical facilities in an environment which supports and promotes rehabilitation and healthy living,” said Atkins’ design director for the project Ray Phillips. “We aimed to create a cohesive and carefully-planned sustainable urban environment, which will offer a high quality of life for its residents as well as attracting investment, generating jobs and strengthening the city’s economy. Our design incorporates core principles of carbon reduction, waste reduction and use of local and sustainable materials, so as to create a truly contemporary and sustainable development.”

The area surrounding the hospital will host a number of other facilities including a hotel, spa, educational and training facilities for doctors and nurses and a well-being centre, alongside accommodation and commercial and service facilities for visitors and residents.
