Atkins helps put Denmark's construction permits online

14 Mar 13 Atkins has been brought in by local authorities in Denmark create a web-based geographic information system (GIS) for professionals and the general public to apply for construction and environmental permits.

The new system has been set up to respond to a nationwide call by the Danish government to drive 80% of any communications with the public onto digital platforms in a bid to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Called Build and Environment, the online self-service system will cover 350 types of building projects including listed buildings and seven types of environmental cases.

Atkins’ GIS specialists have incorporated maps into the programme with integrated drawing tools that enable users to insert an address or use a search facility to locate the appropriate piece of land. The drawing tools will allow users to sketch the project and reveal any restrictions such as environmetal protection areas that may prohibit a permit. The map will help users see whether moving the location of the project slightly would avoid such restrictions.

Eli Skop, Atkins’ director on the project, said: “Our tailored GIS system means that the user will be able to easily identify the location linked to their application. They can follow a step-by-step guide to making an application and pull together the required documentation prior to submission.  The whole application process can be navigated, managed and tracked online, generating both time and cost benefits, and help to achieve the government’s efficiency target.”

Atkins is working as a sub consultant to Schultz, the IT supplier for Kombit, which is the company set up by the local government authorities to provide their IT solutions. The system will go live to the public during 2014.
