Atkins picked for Californian toll road scheme

30 Jan 13 California Bay Area’s Metropolitan Transportation Commission has picked Atkins as toll system manager to develop a regional express lane network.

The five-year contract calls for Atkins to provide strategic advice, develop system requirements and support the procurement of a system integrator.

In October 2011, the California Transportation Commission (CTC) found the regional express lane network eligible for development and operation by MTC. The includes converting existing high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes to express lanes and constructing a network of new express lanes with a total length of 270. Financial and operational analyses indicate that the program will extend over a period of 20 years.

The first phase will create 76 lane miles of new express toll lanes (ETLs) in the San Francisco Bay area that are slated to open to traffic in 2015. The programme also calls for environmental studies to be completed for a portion of I-80 in Solano County.

“The MTC selection committee recognised that our team is a national leader in EXPRESS LANE and toll system implementation,” said Atkins’ senior practice manager John Doan. "From Washington State to Washington, DC, Atkins’ staff of toll professionals has worked on over half of the operational managed lane projects in the United States.”
