Atkins takes Florida role into second quarter-century

15 Feb 13 Atkins been reselected as Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise’s (FTE) general engineering consultant (GEC).

The company has already served in the role for 25 years and the new contract is for another five years.

As an extension of FTE staff, Atkins will continue to provide technical and professional personnel to deliver FTE’s aggressive capacity improvement and modernisation programme. Specific services include production tasks such as planning, conceptual engineering and programme as well as toll operations, and work in support of bond requirements. Atkins’ Matt Lamb will continue as program director.

With Atkins support, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise has grown to have a 460-mile toll system—the largest in the state of Florida and the fourth largest in the USA. On average, 1.8 million motorists use Florida’s Turnpike each day.  In recent years, Atkins has supported FTE by delivering more than 140 miles of expansion projects, implementing the SunPass electronic toll-collection system statewide and initiating open road tolling (ORT).

The next major FTE improvement programmes that Atkins will support include the widening and upgrading of the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike (HEFT) in Miami/Dade County and the Veterans Expressway in West Central Florida.

Atkins has served as programme manager or GEC for more than 30 toll agencies across the USA and has provided toll-related services for capital improvements exceeding US$25bn (£16bn).
