Babcock Amec JV earns £650m National Grid extension

11 Jan 12 A joint venture of Babcock, Amec and Mott MacDonald has been awarded a five-year extension to its existing Electricity Alliance West framework contract to maintain and upgrade overhead power lines across the UK.

Under the £650m contract, the JV will continue to provide National Grid with design engineering, programme management and construction services through to March 2017.  Babcock and Amec are majority partners in the JV, each with a 47.5% share.

Babcock chief executive Peter Rogers said: "We are delighted that our long standing customer National Grid has extended our existing contract, which reflects the excellent performance of the Alliance over the past five years.  We look forward to building on this partnership with National Grid as it delivers the significant investment programme required to support the UK's growing energy needs."

Mike Saunders, president of Amec’s Power and Process Europe business, said: "This extension to 2017 is testimony to the excellent day-to-day performance of the Alliance and the focus we have placed on ensuring we safely meet the requirements of a very important and long-standing customer."

National Grid UK construction director Peter Boreham said: "In the period up to 2021, National Grid expects to invest around £20bn in our gas and electricity transmission infrastructure to support the UK's growing energy needs. Our construction division has a major role to play in supporting this unprecedented level of growth and the continuation of our alliance partnerships will play a pivotal role in successfully delivering that forecasted increase, with a continued focus on delivering our work safely, efficiently and sustainably."
