Balfour Beatty has been contracted to create new open plan workshops for engineering, fabrication, welding and automotive trades, which will be taught in trade clusters. The scheme is being built on a live, occupied college site, requiring coordination of construction activities around the college timetable.

Construction of the new engineering facilities is due for completion by autumn, in time for the next academic year.

While on site, Balfour Beatty will try to help construction and engineering students; it has already held an open day to promote apprenticeship and career opportunities in the industry. The event was attended by more than 550 people, with 30 potential apprentices interviewed for placements among Balfour Beatty’s supply chain partners.

“It was fantastic to see so many young people attending and their enthusiasm made the whole event very worthwhile,” said project manager Barry Doidge.
