Balfour Beatty Rail Making Safety Personal

4 Apr 11 At a recent event in Berlin, Balfour Beatty Rail recognised and rewarded the dedication of its employees’ safety focus and determination for their support on the journey to Zero Harm by 2012.

The Zero Harm awards enable employees to showcase their innovative ideas of how safety could be improved across the business.

This year there was an astonishing 48 entries of which all had merit in improving safety performance. Unfortunately not all could win and of the 48, the top ten were shortlisted and were presented to a panel of judges.

The two runners up were David Gregory from the UK with his light signal weighing only 25 kg, extremely easing handling and Ralf Meyer from Germany with his insulated conductor cover, improving the safety near live cables.

The winner was Sandro Paludi from Italy for his new mobile elevating hybrid platform that exceeds the limits of traditional railway platforms especially as regard safety and comfort for operatives. In addition, the platform is double powered (Diesel and Electric) and therefore environmentally friendly through reduced noise and air emissions.

Each winner was awarded a Zero Harm branded Berlin Buddy Bear and a cheque. The two runners up each received €300 and the winner received €600.

The total award sum will be doubled by Balfour Beatty Rail GmbH and will be donated to the victims of the Tsunami and Earthquake in Japan.
