Balfour Beatty wins £43m Reading rail viaduct

3 Dec 12 Balfour Beatty has been awarded a £43.5m contract to build a new railway viaduct as part of the Reading station area redevelopment project.

Some trade magazines had reported the contract as worth £70m but the latest issue of the EU Official Journal clearly sets the value at just a shade under £43.5m.

Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering will build a 2km section of elevated railway, made up of earth ramps, viaduct sections and intersection box structures, to grade separate the realigned main passenger lines from freight lines.

Bam Nuttall, Carillion and Morgan Sindall were also shortlisted for the Reading viaduct implementation works  contract.

Work is now expected to start early next year.
