BBMV confirmed for Crossrail Whitechapel and Liverpool Street contract

10 Jan 11 The BBMV joint venture has been formally confirmed by Crossrail as the winner the £235m Whitechapel and Liverpool Street Station tunnels contract.

The JV comprises Balfour Beatty, Alpine BeMo Tunnelling, Morgan Sindall and Vinci Construction.

The award was first announced by Crossrail last month, subject to EU procurement procedures.

The Whitechapel and Liverpool Street Station tunnels contract covers the construction of all station tunnels and associated works, and forms an integral part of the wider project. Each station has two platforms approximately 400m long, numerous cross-passages and underground branches connecting to the new Crossrail stations. The works represent a total of about 190,000m³ of excavation and 60,000m³ of concrete lining

Work is expected to start in February 2011 and should take five years to complete.

Crossrail will provide a new rail link connecting the City and Canary Wharf, the West End and Heathrow Airport to commuter areas east and west of London.

Ian Tyler, of Balfour Beatty, which has a 30% share of the JV, said: "This contract will require a team with technical and resource capability, and a comprehensive understanding of both the local issues and the requirements of the key stakeholders involved."

Morgan Sindall chief executive Paul Smith said: “The award demonstrates the group's leading edge skills in tunnel engineering and the fact that we are part of a very strong joint venture which has extensive construction capabilities."

This is one of four major tunnelling contracts on the project, collectively worth £1.25bn, that were announced last month.
