Bilfinger expands in US with acquisition

13 Jul 12 Bilfinger Berger has strengthened its industrial services business in the USA with the acquisition of Westcon.

The company, located in North Dakota, generates an output volume of approximately €150m (£118m) with about 1,000 employees. Bilfinger Berger has acquired 100% of the company, which was previously owned by management and financial investors. The two parties have agreed to keep the terms of the sale confidential.

“With the acquisition of Westcon, we are expanding our regional presence in the USA and at the same time gaining access to new clients,” said Bilfinger Berger executive board member Thomas Töpfer. Westcon's range of services includes piping systems, steel construction, plant assembly as well as maintenance and repair. The company is benefitting from investments being made in the oil and gas sector, particularly for the development of gas shale areas in northern and eastern USA. Westcon also serves clients in the chemical industry and in energy generation.

Bilfinger Berger intends to substantially expand its business activities in the USA. The Group's current activities there are focused on the maintenance of industrial facilities. To date this has primarily been for the oil and gas industry in the southern part of the country as well as for clients in the process and consumer goods industries. Other activities include specialised services for real-estate maintenance. In financial year 2011, Bilfinger Berger generated an output volume of €600m in the United States with more than 3,000 employees.
