Boom predicted for NZ construction

5 Jan 12 New Zealand’s NZ$8.5bn (£4.3bn) building sector is predicted to be on the point of a major recovery that will create good opportunities for British firms.

“New Zealand’s Westpac Institutional Bank is predicting that the Christchurch and Canterbury rebuild will bring an extra NZ$20bn in national construction spending, kick starting the industry,” said Paul Arthur, director of UK-based migration specialist the Emigration Group. “This investment will lead to a demand for skilled building workers from overseas, creating both good job and business opportunities for skilled construction workers in the UK who are willing to go down under.”

The Westpac economists predict Auckland and Christchurch house-building will be a big driver, alongside Christchurch infrastructure work.

“We’ve worked with a number of businesses both small and large who have started a New Zealand operating arm and we have lots of clients who are struggling for work here emigrating overseas,” he added. “With the current shortage of skilled workers, it’s much easier to qualify for a visa to emigrate or to start a business in NZ.  It’s definitely an option worth considering, particularly for those who would like to start a life down under.”

He added that economic factors are proving a driving force for emigration down under, but said that it is also worth bearing in mind that NZ is ranked one of the best countries in the world for the quality of life it offers. “This is a strong pull for many Brits,” he said. “The combination of affordable housing, stunning scenery, a good climate and a better work life balance is a real draw for many.  For those in the construction industry looking for a good business opportunity and a good quality of life, NZ is a natural choice.”
