Dr Ghumra will lead a team that seeks to help construction companies manage their supply chain risks and opportunities.

He joins from Loughborough procurement consultancy Responsible Solutions. Before that he was head of sustainability at building materials group Aggregate Industries for four years until early 2014. He also contributes to a number of ISO and CEN committees on sustainability in construction.

BRE group business development director Miles Watkins said: “Shamir brings with him a wealth of experience in advising global blue chip businesses like Kier and AkzoNobel. We are very pleased to have him on board at a key time of growth in our business.”

Part of Dr Ghumra’s new role will involve managing the Action Programme for Responsible Sourcing (APRES), a network group created by Loughborough University that BRE now manages.

Shamir Ghumra said: “Responsible sourcing is an increasingly significant driver for the construction industry. Customers and clients are not only demanding environmental impact data on the products they procure but they also want to know that the rights of the people working along the supply chain are protected and enhanced. What sets BRE apart from the competition in this field is its primary research which enables the team to develop challenging standards products and systems that support sustainable development and drive positive change in the built environment. It is a very exciting time to be joining BRE.”
