The government of the central state, Aguascalientes, plans to use BRE standards on future developments in the state and encourage roll out across the country.
The collaboration agreement comes at a time of unprecedented growth in the Mexican built environment with issues like sustainability, energy efficiency and security high on the agenda for new buildings, homes, communities and infrastructure.
Aguascalientes is currently driving the environmental agenda for the country and is creating green growth by attracting new investment from global companies including Nissan, which is manufacturing eco-car the Leaf from a plant in the state’s capital city.
Speaking at the signing event in Mexico city, BRE’s head of international Orivaldo Barros said: ‘Mexico’s government and people are committed to mitigating climate change and have set themselves a tough target for carbon emissions reduction. An environmental standard for buildings like BREEAM, which is used in over 70 countries throughout the world has clear and demonstrable social, economic and environmental benefits and is adaptable for Mexico in line with their own specific issues. LPCB standards are also used around the world to ensure that buildings conform to the highest fire and security standards. Our standards will be a great fit.’
Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, who witnessed the signing, said: “In the UK we have some of the best standards in the world that have helped us to develop our built environment in ways that not only benefit people and property but also our planet. This collaboration will enable these standards to be adapted locally for Mexico with great outcomes for the many large scale developments in the pipeline.”
The director of Institute for Housing of Aguascalientes Edgar Gardia said: “We are very pleased to collaborate with BRE with great support from the British Embassy in Mexico. BRE’s knowledge and experience can provide an invaluable resource to Mexico and help us to deliver the best outcomes for our country and communities.”
