BRE Victorian terrace uses Redland craftsman tiles

17 Mar 11 Rosemary Clay Craftsman tiles from Redland were chosen to complete the roof of the ground-breaking refurbishment of Victorian buildings at the Building Research Establishment.

The purpose the project is to trial a range of solutions to bring a solid wall building up to modern thermal insulation standards while at the same time keeping the original character of the design.

To this end as many of the original roof tiles as possible were re-used. Redland was contacted to supply the remainder as its Rosemary Clay Craftsman tiles faithfully reproduce the warm rustic texture of the Victorian hand-made products.

“There will always be a place for traditional clay tiles, particularly in refurbishment projects or conservation areas with particularly tight planning constraints” says product manager Steve Rose. ”We are delighted to be able to fulfil this niche demand with a high-quality clay tile that capitalises on Rosemary's 170 year heritage of clay tile production in the UK.”

The Victorian terrace project was officially opened by Gregory Barker, Minister of Energy and Climate Change on 10 March.
