Bribery Act guidance clears corporate hospitality

31 Mar 11 Wimbledon tickets, fine dining and factory visits in exotic locations will all continue to be perfectly legal when the Bribery Act comes into force on 1 July, new guidance makes clear.

Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke said that the new legislation was firmly aimed at ‘facilitation payments’ such as payments by agents or senior employees to win contracts or gain preference – which were already illegal anyway.

Corporate hospitality is not prohibited by the legislation. The official guidance to the legislation states: “You can continue to provide tickets to sporting events, take clients to dinner, offer gifts to clients as a reflection of your good relations, or pay for reasonable travel expenses in order to demonstrate your goods or services to clients if that is reasonable and proportionate for your business.”
