Broadmoor bids under review

10 Jan 13 The contractor for the £150m redevelopment of Broadmoor Hospital is on course to be selected in May.

Five firms - Balfour Beatty, Skanska, Vinci, Willmott Dixon and Kier – submitted their tenders to West London Mental Health NHS Trust on Friday 4 January 2013.

A new building is to be constructed within the grounds of the existing Victorian hospital. The new Broadmoor Hospital will have 234 beds, providing secure accommodation for 210 male patients and space for 24 flexible beds. Construction is scheduled to take just under four years and be complete by January 2017.

Redevelopment programme manager David Phillips said: “Senior managers at the Trust are now in the process of reviewing each application. During this exercise, we will be assessing the past experience and performance of each company, their ability to provide value for money for the NHS and what specific skills their organisation and employees can bring to such a large scale project.”

Redevelopment background preparation work is almost complete, with a series of enabling works underway and the full business case shortly due to be considered by the Department of Health. If approved, under current project timescales, the Trust will be required to name the successful bidder by May 2013. The aim is to mobilise on site by December 2013.

Broadmoor is one of three high security hospitals in England and has housed some of Britain’s most notorious prisoners, including Moors murderer Ian Brady and Yorkshire ripper Peter Sutcliffe.
