9 Jan 14 Builders’ merchant Grafton Group, which includes the Plumbase, Selco and Jackson brands, has returned to growth for the first time in five years.

Group revenue for the 12 months to 31 December 2013 was up 8% to £1.90bn, from £1.76bn for 2012.

The Irish-owned company gets three-quarters of its revenue from UK merchanting operations, which saw revenue growth of 6.7% in 2013.

Growth was attributed to improvement in the housing market and growth in the branch network through acquisitions and organic developments.

CEO Gavin Slark said: "There are encouraging signs that the relatively recent recovery underway in our principal markets appears to have more substantive foundations. Grafton is well placed to benefit from a sustained improvement in trading conditions, but we are adopting a cautious stance towards our prospects for 2014 until such time that activity levels in our principal markets have strengthened further."

When the company’s final results are reported in March it will show a full year operating profit (before a non-recurring pension credit) in line with its expectations.
