Developer Essential Living had applied to build the £100m project in the face of much local opposition.
Council planners had previously recommended granting permission for the scheme at 100 Avenue Road but elected members decided against at an open meeting last night.
Local newspaper Ham & High reports that so many people turned up to the meeting at Camden Town Hall that about 100 opponents to the scheme were turned away due to lack of space and security guard had to pull down metal shutters to keep them out.
However the building, designed by Grid Architects, could still go ahead if the Mayor of London chooses to overturn the council’s decision.
