The 5,500-square-metre extension will be over five floors to provide a book storage facility, additional study space, a new lecture theatre and seminar rooms.

The intention is to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Estimated value of the contract is in the range £15m to £17m.

The project architect is Penoyre & Prasad, whose design involves removing sections of floor structure at each level in the central core of the building to let in daylight and create views through the building, and replacing the glazing with curtain walling to tie the new extension into the existing building.

The original building was designed by Lord Holford and constructed in three phases between 1965 and 1990.
