Cardigan retail scheme on course

1 Mar 11 Groundworks for the £50m redevelopment of the Bath House area of Cardigan, Wales, remain on course for completion in spring, allowing construction to start on schedule.

Civil engineering contractor Cuddy said that despite the heavy snow this winter, its 47-week contract remained firmly on time and on budget.

Client Liberty Mercian’s retail development on the site is set to include a J Sainsbury supermarket with access road,

Cuddy’s £4.7m contract includes:

  • Demolition of structures including residential properties that fell within the scheme’s footprint
  • Initial site clearance, earthworks and cut-fill operation totalling 100,000 cubic metres
  • Wick drainage to stabilise pore water pressure
  • Utilities diversion including trenching works and the rerouting of services
  • Earth retention techniques including soil nailing on the cut elevation at the top of the site, and reinforced embankments at the bottom of site
  • Formation of the access road to ensure safe, permanent access to the new development
  • Installation of highway and retail plateau drainage systems and attenuation
  • External works such as landscaping, curbing, street lighting and road signage.

At its peak, Cuddy’s work involves a 55-man team, and a fleet of 10 excavators up to 50t, plus dumper trucks, dozers and tipper lorries.

Cuddy contracts manager Gavin Lockyer said: “Despite unexpected periods of difficult weather conditions over recent months, the 47-week project remains on schedule and to budget. Cuddy’s scheme is set for completion in spring, at which point Cuddy will hand the site back to the client in order for construction to commence.”
