Connor Rawson, who lives in Currock, has secured a place on the national Lovell apprentice training programme. The 18-year-old is starting his career working on two major new-build housing developments being built by the company in Carlisle. Connor has joined the Lovell team carrying out a £4.8 million project to build 43 family homes for affordable rent for social housing organisation Riverside at Caslin Way, formerly Barras Close, in Morton. He is also broadening his experience as a member of the Lovell site team undertaking a £48 million regeneration scheme at the Raffles estate which will create 435 new homes overall. Working in partnership with Riverside and Carlisle City Council, Lovell is currently building the scheme’s 77-home third phase.
With support from Lovell, Connor will be working his way towards an NVQ Level 2 qualification in Carpentry and Joinery. In addition, he will attend Carlisle College on a day-release basis to complete the theoretical side of his studies.
“My dad is an electrician so working in the construction industry was something I grew up with and I always knew that I wanted to pursue a career in it myself,” explains Connor. “I enrolled at Carlisle College to study for my Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry and that’s where I heard about the Lovell apprenticeship scheme. It seemed ideal so I decided to apply.”
Throughout his apprenticeship, Connor will receive expert guidance from Lovell craft trainee supervisor Paul Woby who oversees his training.
“I’m loving my apprenticeship so far – I’m really enjoying the challenge of using a variety of different carpentry skills,” says Connor. “Once I’ve completed my NVQ studies, I want to progress my career and eventually become a site manager.”
“Connor has impressed us with his enthusiasm and dedication in the short time he has been with Lovell and has all of the attributes needed to become a first-class carpenter,” says Lovell craft trainee supervisor Paul Woby. “We’re looking forward to working with him to help develop his talents and fulfil his undoubted potential.”
