Carpenter Daniel is Apprentice of the Year for Lovell in North West

4 Feb 11 During national Apprenticeship Week 2011 (7 to 11 February), teenager Daniel Searson has been named by affordable housing developer and regeneration specialist Lovell as the company’s Apprentice of the Year for its North West region.

Daniel, 19, was selected by Lovell for his outstanding performance while working towards an NVQ Level 2 qualification in Carpentry and Joinery, which he has successfully achieved with the company’s support.

It’s the second time in a matter of months that Daniel, who joined Lovell in 2008, has been rewarded for his carpentry work. He was also recently named Carpentry and Joinery Learner of the Year – 2nd Year by Accrington and Rossendale College, where he has been studying for the theoretical side of his qualification on a day release basis.

“Winning two awards for something I enjoy doing so much is fantastic,” says Daniel. “I knew that I’d been nominated for both prizes but it was still a surprise when I found out that I’d won. There are so many talented apprentices working for Lovell and studying at the College, so to be chosen ahead of them makes me very proud.”

Daniel is now continuing to build up his experience on site as a member of the Lovell team working on a £5.6 million, 50-home development at the Langley Estate, Middleton, north Manchester, which the company is carrying out in partnership with social housing provider Riverside.

On site, Daniel is closely supervised by qualified tradespeople with Lovell craft training supervisor Paul Woby acting as his training mentor and overseeing his progress.

“It’s great being part of the team working at Langley – everyone is really helpful and supportive and it’s great to know that there is someone around to ask if there’s anything I’m unsure of,” says Daniel. “When I’ve gained the practical experience I need in order to become fully-qualified, I would like to continue to develop my skills and eventually become a site manager.”

“The work produced by Daniel since he joined us has been of a consistently high standard,” explains Paul Woby, craft trainee supervisor for Lovell, which has its regional offices at Park Road, Altrincham. “We’ve all been impressed by his enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. He’s a thoroughly deserving winner and is setting a great example for others to follow.”

Mark Wilkinson, joinery lecturer at Accrington and Rossendale College, says: “Daniel was an exemplary student who combined talent with hard work so it’s no surprise that he’s winning awards. The quality of his work was always outstanding and I’m sure we’ll hear more success stories about him in the future.”
