Causeway's ECM delivers major savings with a fast payback for Stepnell

24 Feb 11 In adopting Causeway's Enterprise Content Management (ECM) system, regional construction contractor Stepnell expects to save £3 million pounds over a five year period, with a return on investment of less than one year.

Removing the need to print, file and retrieve all documentation manually will also eliminate the need for 700 metres of shelving every year, delivering an efficiency saving of 1200 person-days per annum.

Established in 1867, Stepnell is a £60m turnover family owned construction company that enjoys healthy growth and significant repeat business. As the company has grown it has found its paper-based content management system increasingly difficult to manage. This issue was highlighted when the company won a contract to design, construct and maintain 10 new PFI fire stations across Staffordshire.

"This project highlighted the need for more configurability and flexibility in a document management solution. Collaboration and integration is a key factor in the success of such projects and we were struggling to manage our chosen solution effectively," recalled Stepnell Director, David Brill.

Having evaluated a number of products, Stepnell opted for Causeway ECM. "It quickly became apparent that Causeway ECM was a comprehensive and superior product," David Brill continued. "Independent sources confirmed fantastic adoption rates with Causeway's solution, with over 95% of staff engaging with the software. Successful content management is reliant on high levels of end user adoption; if we could realise a 95% engagement within our company, we would achieve the very point of the software.

"We were also reassured by the fact that Causeway was backed by ECM experts Open Text. With an annual R&D investment of £200m every year, this put Causeway in a completely different class," he added.

Causeway ECM is fully integrated with Microsoft Office and Outlook, and with Stepnell's pre-existing system. Workflow tools and electronic forms have facilitated configuration of ISO standards, automation of business processes and the sharing of important documentation between staff and partners.

"I have no doubt Causeway ECM will pay for itself and continue, year upon year, to make significant financial savings and improvements in efficiency and production. More functional and configurable than other systems, Causeway ECM is a user friendly solution that we can roll out at our own pace with guaranteed end user uptake," David Brill concluded.
