Contractor Greenland Construction Group said that the municipal government initiated the plan. The Eco Tower Wuhan Center was originally designed to have 119 stories and stand 606m. This would make it China’s second-tallest building upon completion in 2017.
The change in plan could take its height beyond the 632m of the Shanghai Tower, which is currently being built as the country's tallest building and will be more than double the hieght of the 310m Shard in London. All would still be dwarfed by the world’s current record holder Dubai's 830m Burj Khalifa and towers of 1,000m or more planned in both Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan.
A feasibility report on the possible changes is being discussed ahead of a final decision, according to Xinhua.
Construction began in 2010 and the building’s foundations will be completed this year. The design is by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, which is also the architect for the 1,000m-high Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia.
