Chancellor breaks ground at 5 Broadgate

2 Mar 12 Chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne yesterday got into the seat of a piling rig to perform ground breaking duties on the new £340m UBS building at 5 Broadgate in the City of London.

No significant damage was reported.

Developer for the project is British Land in joint venture with British Land and Blackstone, with Mace as project manager. It is expected to create more than 5,000 construction jobs over the next three years.

The chancellor joined British Land chief executive Chris Grigg, Blackstone senior managing director Chad Pike and senior representatives of Swiss bank UBS, the building’s tenant, at a groundbreaking event to mark the start of construction.

On completion in 2014, the occupied 12 storey building, designed by architectural practice Make, will provide 700,000 square feet of Grade ‘A' office space.
