CIC publishes its BIM protocol

4 Mar 13 The Construction Industry Council (CIC) has published three guides on the use building information modelling (BIM).

The CIC’s BIM protocol has been published along with a best practice guide (Best Practice Guide for Professional Indemnity Insurance when using BIM) and a scope of services (Outline Scope of Services for the role of Information Management). All three documents are available to download free at www.cic.org.uk.

The BIM protocol was commissioned by CIC as part of its response to the government BIM strategy. It has been drafted for use on all common construction contracts and supports BIM working at Level 2.

The protocol identifies the building information models that are required to be produced by members of the project team and puts into place specific obligations, liabilities and associated limitations on the use of the models.

The protocol can also be used by clients to require the adoption of particular ways of working – such as the adoption of a common naming standard.
