Coffey in alliance team for NZ causeway

17 Mar 13 Coffey has been appointed as part of an alliance team to upgrade the SH16 Causeway in New Zealand.

The SH16 Causeway Alliance comprises Coffey Geotechnics, Aecom, Fulton Hogan, Leighton Contractors, Sinclair Knight Merz and the New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA).

The NZ$220m (£120m) project involves a 4.5km stretch of the SH16 near Auckland. It is a key component of the Western Ring Route, a 47km motorway alternative to State Highway1 and the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

The alliance will deliver the main road works and all other activities, including preparation of the site for the bridge contractor.

The project includes raising the causeway 1.5m to stop flooding during peak tides, widening the motorway to four lanes city-bound and 4/5 lanes westbound and improving the treatment of stormwater before it is discharged into the Waitemata Harbour.

Enabling work is under way and construction on the upgrade itself is due to start in the middle of the year. The project will be completed in late 2016.
