Construction boosted by Regional Growth Fund

12 Apr 11 Several construction projects are set to move forward after winning funding in the first round of the government’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF).

Many of the 50 schemes selected have a strong construction element. The schemes have won government backing on the basis that they create jobs and generate economic growth in their region. They will share in a pot of public money totalling £450m., which the government expects to leverage more than £2.5bn of private sector investment.

Construction projects selected for backing include:

  • expansion of the Haribo sweet factory near Wakefield
  • the development of a former eye hospital in Manchester into a biomedical centre of excellence
  • construction of a manufacturing plant on the Lotte Chemical site in Teesside to develop resins for food and drink packaging;
  • construction of an £18m link road between Robin Hood airport and the M18 to facilitate housing, industrial and commercial development south of Doncaster
  • development of a new factory, R&D laboratory and HQ office facility for Holroyd Precision Ltd in Rochdale
  • the Mersey Multi-Modal Gateway (3MG) freight park in Widnes.

More than £15m from teh RGF has also been earmarked for Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Group to widen the A45 near Birmingham Airport from dual carriageway to three lanes and to improve junction 6 of the M42.

The second round of the fund opens to bids today (Tuesday 12 April). This round will aim to allocate a further £950m.
