The TUC says that 281,000 jobs have been lost in the construction industry over the past five years.
There was a slight rebound of 0.8% growth in 2011’s employment figures. There were 17,000 jobs added in construction, taking the total construction workforce from 2,038,000 in Q4 2010 to 2,055,000 in Q4 2011.
The industry “is still a till a long way off its pre-recession health,” said TUC general secretary Brendan Barber.
The TUC wants the government to make investment in jobs its top priority by introducing a guarantee of a paid job or training for any young person out of work for six months or more.
